All this hype around STOs 'replacing' ICOs is a false narrative being disseminated by people who don't understand that in almost all cases, a security token cannot act as a utility token, particularly in the US where the SEC has sent a strong and very clear message. Some sectors such as loyalty programmes need to have a utility token architecture in order to facilitate game mechanics in the network and create viable cryptocurrencies that are fungible, liquid and are in demand. One way of dealing with the discrepency is to use the STO as a replacement for the ICO private presale (small group of private institutional investors and Bitcoin whales) and then later execute a utility token distribution plan which could be a stright sale or in combination with a strategic public airdrop programme that puts the tokens in the hands of the right networks. Then build a community and a closed economy with a token that functions an operating utility within your ecosystem. This is what we call a dual token strategy. Another alternative is a hybrid token, which is essentially a public STO in a European jurisdiction where the token acts as both a security and a utility. Rather than a small STO to institutional investors, you shoot for thousands of investors and unlike the ICOs of last year, the token holders will hold rights for equity or profit sharing. As well as codify milestones in the smart contracts etc.
Despite pundit announcements that ICOs are dead, frankly, they are not. In late February 2019, Fetch.AI raised six million US dollars in a 22 second sell out. Backed by the Binance Lab which gave them ample credibility with not only fiscal backing, but also a clear route to one of the world's largest exchanges guarantees a modem of success. Utility tokens are built on community and network effects, something which security tokens are not designed for – or one can say that hybrid tokens are still early stage. ICOs for loyalty programmes, open source software projects, projects around provenance and supply chain, as well as any community-driven concepts that have self-sufficient, closed economies.
